Five desperate people flee Cuba aboard a homemade raft following an exodus of a hundred thousand countrymen. Oblivious to escalating geopolitical hostilities; American senators who want to preserve the decades-old embargo and oppose the President’s desire to embrace change; and the civil unrest brewing ahead, the rafters risk their lives to change their lives.

Juan initiates the journey, selling lies to convince the others to join him on the raft. Senator Spinelli manipulates the emotions of Cuban American dreamers for self-enrichment and power. With his strategy-savvy Chief of Staff Terri Turner, President Winslow risks the pinnacle of success to change the future. Fidel Castro is a double-dealing despot who will burn the house down around himself in revenge for the exodus. Their collective desperation is woven into a complicated yet beautiful imbroglio of faith, dreams and desire that in the end will unite or destroy them all.

Cuba has been a topic for discussion, worry, novels, and speculation for much of my life. Only 90 miles off the coast, but a seeming galaxy away. The island where time stood still — in 1959. Living and teaching in south Florida I’ve had the pleasure to know many Cubans, some recent flee-ers, some Pedro Pans. I’ve always wondered just how they feel about El Commandante and their homeland, so near and yet so far. And whether they would truly like to return there. THE LAST RAFT is a fascinating intertwining of stories of balseros (those who try to escape by raft), virulent anti-Castro Cubanos, and politicians trying to do the right thing and bring people peacefully back together. It’s fascinating. John Cunningham, thank you so much.

I love how John has evolved this series into worldwide international thrillers without forsaking the Keys treasure, boats, and planes vibe. As Buck is thrust into further turmoil over his heritage the plot twists and turns, taking his faithful group and vintage seaplane to incredible European destinations, steeped in history and treachery. I loved every page of this adventure.

I knew NOT to expect a Buck Reilly caper but I did not know that I was about to get a front row seat on a makeshift raft in the middle of the ocean during a hurricane. I also did not expect to be a fly on the wall in the Oval Office, as if witnessing the political intrigue and back stabbing first hand. Invading Fidel Castro’s inner sanctum like I was an unseen child witnessing the tirades of a manacle Dictator was yet another unexpected twist. Put it all together and John has created a masterful alternative historical fiction novel that will leave you sad, enlightened, disgusted, delighted, captivated, infuriated and overjoyed before you can put it down. A fascinating read for sure.
